The Walt Disney Co. is believed to be working with federal investigators Tuesday after hackers stole a yet-to-be-released film and threatened to release parts of it absent a ransom, which the computer refuses to pay.
Walt Disney C-E-O Bob Iger disclosed the theft in New York City Monday and said the company is refusing to pay a ransom. Iger did not name the stolen film, which is widely believed to be “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales,” which opens Friday.
The hackers who struck Disney are not believed to be the ones behind the global WannaCry attack, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Iger said the hackers demanded that a huge sum be paid in Bitcoin.
Recently, hackers uploaded 10 episodes of the upcoming season of “Orange Is the New Black” to the peer-to-peer file-sharing Pirate Bay — six weeks before the series’ launch — after Netflix refused to pay a ransom.
