Rejoice!, the second of four Los Angeles Master Chorale seasonal programs, heralds the holidays with three stunning Baroque masterpieces Sunday, December 16, 2012, 7:00pm, at Walt Disney Concert Hall, 111 South Grand Avenue at First Street in downtown Los Angeles.
The Kiki & David Gindler Music Director Grant Gershon conducts the complete 1723 version of Bach’s Magnificat, replete with thundering kettledrums, blazing trumpets and poetic strings, and Vivaldi’s Gloria, which has garnered universal appeal since it was discovered in the early 1900s amongst some of the composer’s lost manuscripts nearly two centuries after his death.
Bach’s motet Lobet den Herrn, alle Heiden, opens the program. Gershon and KUSC Host Alan Chapman participate in ListenUp!, the pre-concert talk at 6:00pm, free to ticketholders.
Soloists, all of whom are Chorale members, include, for Gloria, Deborah Mayhan, soprano, Ayana Haviv, soprano, and Janelle DeStefano, mezzo soprano. For Magnificat they are Risa Larson, soprano, Harriet Fraser, soprano, Niké St. Clair, mezzo soprano, Brandon Hynum, tenor, and Steve Pence, baritone.
