Pistol-Wielding Resident Strikes Fear Near Kenter Canyon School
By JEFF HALL
Lynford Wiley, 46, of Kenter Avenue was arrested on December 5 after brandishing a loaded handgun , including visibly racking a bullet into its chamber, outside the Kenter Canyon School playground while children were present. Many children observed him and he allegedly tried to hand a bullet to a schoolchild and an adult.
The school administration, led by principal Dr. Terry Moren, immediately called 911 and put the school into lockdown mode. Police responded promptly and arrested Wiley at his home, across the street from the playground. Arresting officers found multiple weapons inside Wiley’s residence, including 11 pistols, seven long guns, eight air pistols, a crossbow, a blowgun and some swords. Mr. Wiley, who took off all his clothes before surrendering to the police, is alleged to have been acting and speaking incoherently.
Wiley has a history of alleged “bizarre†behavior, according to neighbors. Wiley’s attorney said Wiley would be attending classes to address behavioral issues.
A meeting of concerned parents, teachers and police officials met at Kenter Canyon School the evening of December 17 to discuss the situation.
Concerned parents asked if Mr. Wiley could be ordered to leave the neighborhood as his house is within feet of the main school yard, but police said this raised constitutional issues that would have to be resolved by the Courts. For now, Wiley may remain in his house, but police said Mr. Wiley’s weapons would not be returned unless ordered by the court.
Wiley has been ordered to not go within 100 yards of the school and to stay away from students, parents and teachers.
The Kenter Canyon School’s Parent Support Group (PSG) is monitoring this case closely. The PSG said it wishes to thank the School administration, police, LAUSD, and the prosecutor’s office for their assistance and to thank several local politicians who have lent their support to the efforts to ensure safety around the school, including Councilman Bill Rosendahl, District Attorney Steve Cooley, and State Senator Fran Pavley.
Wiley was charged with a felony of carrying a loaded weapon near a school and later released on $500,000 bond. He is ordered to appear at a preliminary hearing February 5. Wiley is to undergo psychiatric evaluation. No trial date has been set.
