Innovative Exhibits Include Installation Art and “Landscape and the Los Angeles Imaginationâ€

The spring Beverly Hills artSHOW will feature local artists in more ways than one. Thanks to its innovative partnership with the nonprofit Los Angeles Art Association two major, local artists will present installation art for the upcoming show which will also have a Landscape and the Los Angeles Imagination feature. The Show will run from 10:00am – 6:00p, each day, along the expanse of Beverly Gardens on Santa Monica Boulevard in the heart of Beverly Hills.

Artist Amy Jean Boebel will take over a prominent park tree with whimsical art made from aluminum. For a short, behind-the-scenes look at Ms. Boebel working on this piece in her studio, please watch https://vimeo.com/41527517.

Artist Steve Fujimoto—who creates large, three-dimensional art from wood and other materials—will be installing a piece called Transfiguration for the artSHOW, which will include wood-based, three-dimensional, wall-mounted sculpture as well as a large, free-standing work that incorporates live NOAA weather updates, 200 folded one-dollar bills, lights and recycled lumber. Mr. Fujimoto’s work was also presented in the 2011 Rose Parade as well as on the steps of Los Angeles’ City Hall in connection with the 2011 Occupy L.A. protests.

A show feature for the May 2012 Beverly Hills artSHOW is Landscape and the Los Angeles Imagination. Los Angeles’ stature as a major cultural destination continues to rise as visual artists from L.A. and adjacent areas increasingly focus on the physical Los Angeles environs and their stunning manmade landscapes.

Artists such as Zale Richard Rubins, Martin J. Waterman, Leah Devora, Steve Hodowsky, Eul Hurley and Olivier Pojzman document and imagine a metropolitan terrain that is both exuberant and in decline.

“These artists approach the Los Angeles environment with joy, irony, and the occasionally vicious touch,†says artSHOW coordinator Karen McLean.

In Zale Rubins’ new media photographs, landmark eateries like Marty’s and Pink’s display upbeat signage next to gang tags and deli detritus. Leah Devora depicts lonely shopping carts in parking lot landscapes as well as saturated vistas of Hollywood neighborhoods.

The work of all of these artists will be sprawled across the four garden blocks of the Beverly Hills Show, and each artist will be available to talk with visitors and patrons about his or her work.

Sponsors for the May 2012 show will again include Lincoln. Lincoln has generously offered artSHOW guests the chance to experience the luxury of Lincoln and to help HARK (Healing Arts for Kids) at the same time. All art show guests can test drive a Lincoln vehicle of their choice at the event, and Lincoln will donate $10 to the Children’s Hospital/HARK, as well as provide each test driver with a $15 gift card to the show’s Wine and Dine Garden.

The Children’s Hospital Los Angeles—along with its all-volunteer HARK program—is the artSHOW’s charitable partner. Media partners include the L.A. Weekly—new this year to the artSHOW—as well as KPCC, the listener-supported radio station broadcasting throughout Southern California, along with arts magazines Fabrik, Blue Canvas, and Artweek LA. The artSHOW also has a partnership with the nonprofit Los Angeles Art Association/Gallery 825.

The Beverly Hills artSHOW is produced by the City of Beverly Hills. For the first time, free all-day parking is available during the artSHOW at the City’s 450 N. Crescent Drive parking structure, conveniently located directly across from the Show grounds. Parking is also available and inexpensive in many City parking structures (see http://bit.ly/bhartshowpkg for details) located just south of Santa Monica Boulevard.
