David J, who brought the story of Warhol muse, Edie Sedgwick, Silver for Gold, to the Los Angeles stage has turned his attentions on the saga of the Black Dahlia.
The legendary unsolved murder and mutilation of aspiring actress Elizabeth Shortcase has long tarnished the glitter of Hollywood’s tinsel.
In this theatrical staging, David J’s musical frame-work is melded together with the story of torch singer, Madi Comfort, a historical figure in the real case, whose paramour was one of the prime suspects in Shorts grisly murder. Will her police interrogation reveal a dark secret that will finally unlock the mystery of the Black Dahlia?
The production features live music by David J, Ego Plum and Ysanne Spevack (Smashing Pumpkins, English National Opera). The role of Madi Comfort will be played by Daniele Watts (two-time NAACP Award-winner and Ovation Award nominee), with Tracey Leigh (Obie Award-winner) making special appearances in the role throughout the run.
The part of Lieutenant Frank Jemison will be played by Douglas Dickerman. The play also features the internationally acclaimed Butoh performer, Vangeline.
