For forty-six years, at the intersection of PCH and Webb Way, Keep Christ in Christmas (KCIC), has put up a Nativity scene for the public to enjoy. KCIC owns the crèche but is authorized to place it at the intersection. “It’s an historical event now, so we’re allowed to have it there, as long as we have the proper permits and the like,†says KCIC head and Malibu resident Jackie Sutton.
The crèche is not simply something to look at – it is a community gathering place. KCIC organizes four churches to host gatherings there on each of the Advent’s four Sundays. “We’ve tried to make this a community ecumenical event. We welcome all churches to join us and the local residents in this celebration,†says Sutton warmly.
Malibu Presbyterian will host the first gathering on November 30. On December 7, Calvary Chapel of Malibu hosts, followed by Malibu United Methodist Church on December 14 and Our Lady of Malibu on the final Advent Sunday, December 21. All of the gatherings feature readings by clergy, refreshments and singing. The school band from Our Lady of Malibu School will perform at the final event.
“We get letters from people telling us that they love it,†says Sutton, “they tell us the Nativity scene makes their holidays. The junior minister from Calvary said that he used to ride his bike by [us] as a kid and found it an inspiration,†Sutton continues with obvious pride and love – for her faith and community.
Regardless of your particular beliefs, the crèche serves as a gathering place around which discussions of faith and the holidays occur. Even if people debate its existence, at the very least, strangers can find something about which to connect. And isn’t community the real joy of the season – no matter what your religion?
