AT&T announced today the availability of 1-gigabit- per-second Internet in Los Angeles, starting with two luxury apartment complexes in the downtown area and expanding to other parts of the city in early 2016.
Company officials said the high-speed fiber-optic GigaPowerSM service will allow residential and small business Internet users in Los Angeles to download music, movies and other data more quickly.
The Eighth and Grand and Hanover Grand Avenue apartment complexes in downtown Los Angeles are the first to have access to the gigabit Internet speed service, while access is expected for the rest of Los Angeles next year.
The GigaPower service will allow users to download 25 songs in less than one second, television shows in about three seconds and HD movies in under 36 seconds, AT&T California President Ken McNeely said during a City Hall news conference with Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti.
“Demand for high-speed data grows with each new app and web-based service, and AT&T is delivering to meet that demand,” McNeely said.
Garcetti said “fast, affordable Internet is essential for today’s cities” and will help with efforts to “efficiently deliver electricity, transportation, clean water and lighted streets to Angelenos.”
“The ultra-fast AT&T Gigapower service will help L.A.’s students, entrepreneurs and families succeed and help our city’s economy grow,” he said.
AT&T first installed its GigaPower service in Austin, Texas, two years ago, and has since made it available in more than 1 million locations. AT&T officials said they plan to double availability of the service by the end of next year.

In addition to the gigabit service, AT&T is also looking to work with Los Angeles in providing citywide wireless Internet service, recently submitting a proposal to the city for the CitylinkLA project, company officials confirmed today.
City officials are reviewing the CityLinkLA proposals, which were due Nov. 12.
