Biotech entrepreneur Elizabeth Holmes will deliver this year’s graduation speech at Pepperdine University. Holmes is the founder and CEO of Theranos, a revolutionary blood diagnostics company based in Palo Alto, CA. Just last month, she was named one of TIME Magazine‘s 100 Most Influential People and was featured on CBS This Morning. Holmes’ company Theranos requires only a pinprick and a drop of blood to perform hundreds of tests, from standard cholesterol checks to sophisticated genetic analyses. The results are faster, more accurate, and far cheaper than conventional methods. Holmes’ goal is to empower patients by taking control of their health through real-time diagnosis and monitoring.
Holmes dropped out of Stanford at the age of 19 to launch Theranos, using the money her parents had saved for college for the business. She is the world’s youngest self-made female billionaire and, as of 2014, had 18 U.S. patents and 66 non-U.S. patents in her name. Holmes’ net worth is estimated at $4.5 billion.
