Chef Brandon Grey, AKA the Wizard of ‘Za, Partners with Hi-Lo Liquor for Exclusive Dates
Brandoni Pepperoni, the US Navy veteran-operated pizza pop-up, is returning to Culver City after two months. The pop-up will be located at Hi-Lo Liquor at 8582 Washington Boulevard. Chef Brandon Grey, who has global fine-dining experience, and a deep appreciation for sustainably sourced seafood and local farmers market produce, is known as the Wizard of ‘Za. He announced via his Instagram page, “Mark your calendars because I will be partnering with Hi-Lo Liquor for these selected dates May 9, 23, 30, and June 14.” as a start.
Grey became a cook in the Navy after he enlisted at 18, he was inspired by an Anthony Bourdain segment about “the best carrot he ever eaten,” and went to Australia to experience it himself at the Royal Mail Hotel and learn more as a cook down under. After returning to the United States and working at prestigious restaurants such as Providence, Trois Mec, Cape Seafood & Provisions, and Best Girl at the Ace Hotel, he continued to learn his craft.
During the pandemic, he was asked by a friend if he could make pizza. His website explains the situation, “Brandon did not make pizza. But he lied. He made three pies for his friend, and she told her friends. A few weeks later, chef and author Evan Kleiman mentioned the pizzas on her KCRW radio show, Good Food, and Brandoni Pepperoni was born.”
The pizzas are fresh out of the oven and can be ordered ahead of time here. With such amazing creations as Friday, which is topped with Marinara, Mozzarella, Ezzo Pepperoni, Lemon Ricotta, So Fly, topped with Mozzarella, Smoked Jidori Chicken, Calabrian Chili, Spring Onion, Orange Glaze, and Cilantro, and Born and Raised, which is topped with Marinara, Mozzarella, Parmesan, Her Farm assorted Basils, and Extra Virgin Olive Oil, you can’t miss.
Brandoni Pepperoni also slings ‘Za at Offhand Wine Bar every Saturday. Offhand is located at 3008 Santa Monica Boulevard, in Santa Monica.
