6 Outdoor Southern California Activities to Supplement Sobriety

Living in California has some amazing benefits – beautiful views, temperate weather, and a state government that cares about the environment and its citizens’ mental and physical health. Even with all of the benefits of the environment they live in, half of Californians over age twelve reported having drunk alcohol last year, and a good percentage of those identified as struggling with alcohol consumption. It’s well known that where you live can benefit your health, and if part of your health journey includes sobriety, keep reading to discover some outdoor activities to supplement sobriety that is exclusive to Southern California, whether you’re privileged to live here or just visiting.

Culver City Boulevard Bike Path

When trying to stay sober, getting feel-good endorphins is a must for many people, and there’s no place better to do that than Culver City Boulevard Bike Path. Get your heart rate up and your serotonin high with a quick bike ride, use the path for a stroll to engage in something more mindful, or take it as a route to the beach and sit by the sea to reflect on and envision a healthier, sober you.

Mar Vista Farmers Market

While this is for Sundays between 9 AM and 2 PM, a visit to the outdoor Mar Vista Farmers Market could be just what the doctor ordered during aftercare for addiction. Fuel your body with fresh fruits and vegetables, local tea blends, and other artisan food options. Not only is there plenty of nutrition for your body on site, but it’s also good for your mental well-being with lively music in the form of a band of DJs depending on the weekend. And remember to pick up some beautiful flowers to put a smile on your face when you see them and reflect on how far you’ve come on your sobriety journey.

Santa Monica Pier

Enjoy views of the Pacific and plenty of people watching, all while taking in local culture at the pier for a more slow-paced outdoor activity. Though the pier is bustling, you can stroll, sit, eat, or even ride a Ferris wheel to take your mind off your struggles. The Santa Monica Pier is one of the most photographed locations in the entire state for a reason – it’s beautiful, full of life, and inspiring. You can spend an entire day here and stay energized, making it the perfect distraction in times of difficulty.

Hit the Beach

Not looking for a specific activity? You don’t need one in Southern California. With an average year-round temperature of 70 degrees, you can hit the beach any day, any time. You may have a favorite like Malibu’s Point Dume or Laguna, but if there’s sand and water, you’ve got a beach day at your fingertips. Use the beach to surf and get some cardio in, lay out and take a well-deserved nap, or meditate and achieve a mindful state if you’re in a more secluded area. The beaches of Southern California are some of the most beautiful in the world and can do wonders for your overall health.

Inspiration Point

In or around Newport and need some inspiration before heading to a meeting, detox facility, women only treatment in Newport Beach, or post-treatment support group? Inspiration Point lives up to its name – gorgeous views of the Pacific Ocean and coastline but with plenty of parking that makes it accessible, this is a point you’ll find yourself returning to again and again to regain a peaceful mindset.

Hike Solstice Canyon Trail

Nestled in the Santa Monica Mountains, an hour from Los Angeles, the Solstice Canyon Trail follows a tranquil and flowing creek. This path is about two and a half miles making it the perfect hike for every level of athleticism. The trail also features distant ocean views and a perennial waterfall. You can also enjoy the Robert Ranch House ruins along the path.

There are so many outdoor activities to enjoy in SoCal, from other hikes like the Rising Sun Trail and the Venice Canals to countless outdoor music festivals, theater, and family fun, so truly something for everyone on their sobriety journey. Always remember that you can conquer whatever you set your mind to, and embracing the beauty around you is one aspect of your healing path. Try to find the silver linings and enjoy the journey.
