Playful pups, cute kittens, adorable adults, and sweet seniors will be among more than 1,000 adoptable pets to be showcased at the NKLA (No Kill Los Angeles) Adoption Weekend on Saturday, Nov. 8, and Sunday, Nov. 9, from 10 am to 4 pm, at La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles.
The NKLA Adoption Weekend is one of Best Friends Animal Society’s “Super Adoption” events, which launched 15 years ago and averages hundreds of adoptions per weekend.
The free, family-friendly event attracts thousands of animal lovers with entertainment throughout the day, as well as L.A.’s hottest food trucks. Leashed dogs are also welcome to attend.
“The NKLA Adoption Weekend is the perfect venue to find your new best friend,” said Marc Peralta, executive director of Best Friends Animal Society – Los Angeles. “Last spring, the NKLA Adoption Weekend found homes for close to 500 dogs and cats in 48 hours and we hope to beat that number at this event.”
Adoptable pets from more than 50 local shelters and rescues including L.A. Animal Services and Best Friends Pet Adoption Center in Mission Hills will be featured.
NKLA coalition partners Wags N Walks, Labs and Friends, Angel City Pit Bulls, Boston Buddies, Caring Friends Cat Rescue and Kitty Bungalow will also be on site. Pets from both city and county shelters will be available with adoption fees as low as $50. All pets are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and micro-chipped.
Adopters at the NKLA Adoption Weekend will also receive a free starter kit with pet food, treats, and other items from event sponsors Natural Balance, CloudStar, Banfield, PetSmart, Dogswell, Paw Pack and Pussy and Pooch will also be on site with samples and information about pet services.
The NKLA Adoption Weekend is part of Best Friends No Kill initiative, which has a mission of transforming L.A. into the nation’s largest No-Kill City by 2017.
The need for potential pet owners to adopt their four-legged family member is crucial, according to Peralta.
“The sad truth is that 9,000 dogs and cats are killed in U.S. shelters every day. Best Friends Animal Society believes that number should be zero and adoption is a key component to making that happen,” he said. “It’s only by working together that we will Save Them All and turn L.A. into NKLA.”
