Saint John’s Health Center to Sponsor Cancer and Nutrition Forum

Saint John’s Health Center will sponsor the 2nd Annual Community Cancer Forum — “Your Health and Cancer: Nutrition (Perspectives on Prevention, Early Detection, Treatment and Survivorship)†— on Tuesday, June 12, 2012, 2:00pm-4:00pm and repeated on Wednesday, June 13, 2012 6:30pm-8:30pm at the Santa Monica Public Library Auditorium.

Featuring expert physicians from Saint John’s Health Center and the John Wayne Cancer Institute (JWCI) at Saint John’s, this free educational event will provide vital information about nutrition and diet in cancer prevention and survivorship and will answer the question, “Can the food you eat reduce your risk of developing cancer?â€

Additional discussion will focus on early detection and treatment of digestive system cancers including gastric, esophageal, colorectal, pancreatic and liver cancers. Sean Fischer, MD, medical oncologist and Adjunct Faculty Member at JWCI will address the nutrition and diet connection in a keynote lecture, “Nutrition, Diet and Cancer — Prevention and Survivorship.â€

Colorectal cancer is the third leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States. However, if this disease is diagnosed in its early stages, the odds of survival are significantly improved. Rudolph Bedford, MD, Saint John’s gastroenterologist, will share his expertise on early detection, family risk and screening for gastrointestinal cancers. The information you take away, could save your life or that of a family member, friend or colleague.

Anton Bilchik, MD, PhD, FACS, surgeon and Chief of Medicine and Chief of GI Research at JWCI, will review advances in the treatment of gastrointestinal cancers including, gastric, esophageal, colorectal, pancreatic and liver cancers and provide insight into the research trials currently under investigation.

Marilou Terpenning, MD, FACP, medical oncologist and Director of Oncology at Saint John’s, will moderate the program and the question and answer session.

This program is offered in collaboration with the American Cancer Society. A representative from ACS will be available to provide educational literature and information about support programs for cancer patients and their families.

Reservations are required. Please call 310-829-8453.
