On specific Saturdays, (see list of dates below)10:00am – 11:30am at 1001 Colorado Avenue in Santa Monica.
The 5 Rhythms are a moving medicine wheel that guides you deeply into the inner landscapes of your body, mind and heart and invite you to physicalize the stories held in these places to arrive at a state of equanimity.
Gabrielle Roth, the creator of the practice says that “if you put the psyche in motion it will heal itself” and she saw that most western minds found it challenging to simply sit and find peace and just as yoga was created to loosen the body in preparation for sitting meditation, Roth saw that we were governed by beat and bang and the 4 by 4 beat of rock and pop. She believes that if we engage our minds and drop into the beat we will find the still point we are all longing for.
This practice is not just for ” Dancers”, this work is for all bodies, backgrounds, shapes and sizes.
All ages and physical abilities.
Truly, it simply requires some curiosity and some willingness to explore what is just beneath our skin. To allow many musical landscapes to guide you through the map of the Rhythms which are: Flowing, Staccato, Chaos, Lyrical, and Stillness.
This is a laboratory of seeing oneself with fascination. To meet oneself and others in all our humanity.
Movement is our mother tongue, it is our first language and 80% of our communication is physical.
So come and unwrap the stories that are tattooed into your blood and allow your creativity to rise up into physical form.
No registration necessary, just show up.

Kate Shela knows something. I’m not certain what it is, but I know it’s important. In her words and her movement, she shows us what it is to be alive in the body and how this embodiment is an essential part of being free.
Matthew Brensilver, PhD, ATS Teacher
In the 5 Rhythms, I gain insight into what and who conditions my movement in the same way that in meditation I might see who’s voices conditioned my critical mind…and Kate displays the fruit of her practice in her very being. She’s for real. Dance here now!
Pablo Das. Teacher, ATS Teacher
Kate Shela and the 5 Rthymns created a seamless experience in my practice of Vipassana and movement. This class holds so many of the elements of a seated practice but in moving form, enabling me to see more clearly how I operate in the world of living color. Kate is a gracious, insightful, fun, living expression of dance.
JoAnna Harper ATS teacher
Kate is a wizard weaving a tapestry of sound that allows the body to move naturally; calls the body to move in ways we would never ‘think’ of moving. EVERYONE SHOULD DO THIS!
Mary Stancavage, ATS Teacher
