Etchings provide an intimacy and immediacy we do not find in any other graphic medium. Drawings come close yet do not compare for the remarkable exactitude, the refined detail and poetic depth that etchings alone allow the artist to create. There is no other process so irreversible in spontaneity. And if draughtsmanship is the quintessential criteria for determining the ultimate greatness of an artist, then the etching is the quintessential window through which that greatness may be viewed.
This exhibition titled The Etching includes intaglio prints by seminal printmakers such as Alberto Giacometti, Marino Marini, Henri Matisse, Henry Moore, Pablo Picasso, Rembrandt, whose works in this specific print medium were the forerunners for the contemporary artists in this exhibition, namely Donald Baechler, Erik Desmazieres, Richard Diebenkorn, Jim Dine, Sam Francis, David Hockney, Jasper Johns, Sol Lewitt, Robert Motherwell, Ed Ruscha, Sean Scully, Richard Serra, and Wayne Thiebaud.
