“Delightful! Don’t miss this Jewish Musical!†exclaims Jewish Times.
It’s a passionate, whimsical portrait of life, love, laughter and loyalty played out by a family of Backstreet Ladies in a house of “working girls†in the 1899 New York ghetto, from the creators of the immensely popular “Author! Author! – an evening with Sholom Aleichem.â€
Set against the backdrop of the women’s movement at the turn of the (last) century, the flight from persecution that sent so many European immigrants knocking on America’s doors, and the endless quest of the underclass for self-worth and respectability, BACKSTREET strikes chords that resound deeply not only in Jewish identity, but in all human hearts. “Tuneful and enticing! A simple love story deftly told!†(LA Weekly). Book, music and lyrics for this rousing musical are by award-winning creators Chris DeCarlo, Evelyn Rudie and Matthew Wrather (“A musical spellbinder!†Drama-Logue).
This Playhouse 50th Anniversary year production is directed by Chris DeCarlo and features original cast members DeCarlo and Rudie joined by Vanessa Cate, Carolyn Freeman Champ, Arielle Davidsohn, Melissa Gentry, Brad Geyer, James Hassett, Lauren Marr and Serena Dolinsky, who does double duty as musical director. The authentically detailed and “breathtaking period costuming (FAB hats!)†(The Tolucan Times) by award-winning designers Ashley Hayes and Cheryl Jennings are one of the highlights of this rich musical production.
