LOCAL PHILANTHROPISTS HONORED AT NATIONAL PHILANTHROPY DAY
Los Angeles, CA – October 27, 2009: Each year over 50,000 people across North America celebrate National Philanthropy Day (NPD), to honor local donors, volunteers, foundations, corporations, and young people for the contribution they make to their communities. The Association of Fundraising Professionals, Greater Los Angeles Chapter (AFP-GLAC), honors the sacrifices and contributions that people in our community make each day to help make the greater Los Angeles area a better place.
Honorees will be recognized at a luncheon on Monday, November 9, 2009 at the Beverly Hilton. Mr. Fritz Coleman, NBC-4’s Weathercaster is Master of Ceremonies for the event, which is expected to draw approximately 550 people.
The 2009 Honorees are:
Spirit of Philanthropy Award: Priscilla and Dr. David C. Lizárraga, President and CEO of TELACU/Millennium. Priscilla serves as Senior Vice President of TELACU, an East Los Angeles community development corporation. As the largest organization of its kind in the nation, TELACU focuses its more than $550 million in assets on improving the lives of individuals and families in the communities it serves. Dr. Lizárraga is also the Chairman of the Board of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.
Lifetime Achievement Award: Marion and John Anderson – are among the most notable philanthropists in the city of Los Angeles, with more than four decades of exceptional voluntary leadership and generosity to children’s health care, education and the arts. They have poured their souls into so many organizations, including Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, the Greater Los Angeles YMCA, United Way and KCET. The Andersons continue to build the Marion and John E. Anderson Charitable Foundation into a major charitable force.
Outstanding Philanthropist: Steve Needleman, President and CEO of ANJAC; Owner, Orpheum Theatre. Along with his wife Cathy, Steve has contributed his time and support to numerous organizations. Steve is currently Board Chair for the California Hospital Medial Center Foundation.
Outstanding Private or Community Foundation: Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Foundation. The Foundation has dramatically expanded their impact in Los Angeles becoming major supporters of the Fulfillment Fund, Music Center, Otis College of Art and Design, Iris Cantor-UCLA Women’s Health Center, Women’s Health Education and Research Center and the Iris Cantor Breast Imaging Center.
Outstanding Corporation or Corporate Foundation: Union Bank Foundation. In 2006, Union Bank foundation developed a “theory of change†to guide the Foundation’s grant-making, helping shape a vision toward philanthropy that creates and sustains communities.
Outstanding Volunteer Organization: Aramark Corporation. More than 150 ARAMARK employees dedicated their time, energy and talents to revitalizing the Salvation Army’s Red Shield Youth and Community Center. Red Shield serves as an oasis for more than 4000 at risk children and allows them to participate in everything from sports and tutoring to art programs and computer learning.
Outstanding Volunteer: Laura and Don Butler. Laura Butler has been involved with many organizations over the years, most notably with the Huntington Library and the Assistance League of Glendale. Don Butler is also involved with a number of organizations, including Verdugo Hills Hospital, Goodwill of Southern California, and Woodbury University.
Outstanding Professional: Jeanne Brodeur, VP of Development at the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, and Board Member, AFP-GLAC.
Outstanding Youth Volunteer: Jeremy Forman. At 14, Jeremy and his father, Scott, created Jr. Variety (jrvarietysocal.org): the junior organization of Variety – The Children’s Charity of Southern California (varietysocal.org).
