‘M’ is for Melancholia. An exbition directly inspired by Susan Sontag’s classic book, On Photography (see chapter: ‘Melancholy Objects’). An exhibition featuring the work of five seasoned artists, all using photography to make work that relies strongly on the peculiar property of the photograph and our emotional ties to it, to explore concepts of ‘the melancholy’ and the manufacturing of Past.
Consider the following thought: To ‘take a photograph’ is to memorialize the subject of that photograph – to replace the ‘being’ or the ‘now’ of an event, person or place and manifest it as an ‘image’ – the photograph comes to represent not only the thing it depicts but also a memorial to it’s own existence.
The exhibition features rising star Jefferson Hayman, of ‘Pixies’ album cover fame (showing some of his classic work), Domenico Foschi, the stunning wet plate collodion works (think: Sally Mann – but with prints on glass and aluminum! – NOT to be missed!) of Kerik Kouklis and Victor Milin.
A special side exhibiton of Larbalestier’s vintage works for the Pixies and works for their new album release Minotaur will also be shown.
