The United States Supreme Court narrowly made a historic ruling today when they dismissed the appeal filed by the advocates of California’s Proposition 8, the voter approved measure that overturned same-sex marriage. In a 5-4 decision strange bedfellows Chief Justice John Roberts, wrote the majority opinion, for Justice Scalia and Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Stephen G. Breyer, Elena Kagan and himself. The court did not take a stand on gay marriage but simply ruled that the group who advocated for the proposition against gay marriage did not have the legal standing in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals to bring the case. Thus, the highest court of our land technically returned the case to the circuit that includes California with instructions for them to dismiss the appeal thus encodifying the trial court’s decision ruling that Proposition 8 was discriminatory and thus unconstitutional.

Personally, I am in favor of same sex marriage. My husband and I have been together for 10 years and trust me, even though we’re heterosexual ours is a same sex marriage (I cannot tell a lie – this is a take off on a brilliant Bill Maher joke) just like all those other monogamous couples, both gay and straight across our state. We are all God’s creatures, let us go forth and form loving unions we can boost the economy in the process by planning celebrations to institutionalize these unions.
