Curtain call for Annenberg Space for Photography exhibit “Emerging” in Century City

Reindeer can spook suddenly, so Nils Peder kneels calmly in the midst of the herd on which his livelihood depends. He holds a lasso color-coded to indicate the temperature and season in which it works best. As he watches the animals, Nils Peder is yoiking, chanting a throaty, traditional Sami song evoking his wife, Ingrid. The Lutheran pastors who converted the Sami forbade yoiking, calling it devil's music. Nils Peder learned it from his grandparents and has taught it to his children.

The stylish exhibit that inspired a summer concert series will soon make way for the next fall photography display – visit the Annenberg Space for Photography before it’s too late.

Century City’s PYT known as “Emerging,” the Space’s summer showcase, ends Sunday, Sept. 20 after a three-and-a-half month run.

With images from more than 90 up-and-coming photographers, “Emerging” has given Los Angeles a jump on the newly picked artists and photojournalists to watch.

Most of the photographers are relatively new to the profession, but their works coalesce into a new generation’s gaze. Themes of youth culture, family, the environment, economic uncertainty, civil unrest and the nature of the photographic image are explored with a fresh and keen perspective about the world, as the photographers come from 30 different countries.

True to the Millennial form, with nearly 100 prints, the exhibition also include videos, multimedia pieces, self-published books, zines and a changing slideshow of images posted on social media illustrating the materialization of how these photographers have shown and shared their work.

The venue partnered with Photo District News (PDN), an award-winning monthly magazine for professional photographers, and featured works that were previously in “PDN’s 30,” an annual selection of 30 emerging photographers who represent a range of styles and genres and hold a distinctive vision.

“Emerging” was also the source of inspiration behind the Annenberg Space for Photography and KCRW’s free summer concert series, Sound in Focus. Held in Century Park, the ultra-popular line-up included TV on the Radio/Boxed In (July 25), De La Soul/Quantic (Aug. 1), Dwight Yoakham/X (Aug. 8), and Cold War Kids/Other Lives (Aug. 15). The intersection of music and photography was a way to use the arts and public space to engage and connect.

“We created the Annenberg Space for Photography to showcase the most extraordinary photographic art. But we’ve also worked to make it an extraordinary public space – a place for the entire LA community to engage with creativity, and with each other,” said Wallis Annenberg, Chairman, President and CEO of the Annenberg Foundation, when the Sound in Focus line-up was released. “That’s why I’m so pleased to announce our third concert series. It’s been said that great music, like the greatest art, gives soul to the universe and flight to the imagination. That’s what Sound In Focus is about. And I’m grateful to KCRW for their partnership.”

In the eye of the space, the exhibit also shows an original short documentary commissioned by the Annenberg Space for Photography and produced by Arclight Productions.

The film profiles the work of 10 photographers who have been featured in PDN’s 30: Corey Arnold, Olivia Bee, Peter DiCampo, Pari Dukovic, JUCO, Dina Litovsky, Diana Markosian, Ilvy Njokiktjien, Katie Orlinsky, and Marcus Smith.

The exhibition is guest curated by PDN leadership: Editor in Chief, Holly Stuart Hughes; Senior Editor, Conor Risch; Photo Editor, Amy Wolff; Executive Editor, David Walker; and Creative Director, Darren Ching.

Hours are on Wednesday through Sunday from 11 am to 6 pm. Admission is free.

The Annenberg Space for Photography is located at 2000 Avenue of the Stars in Century City. Skylight Studios is located at 10050 Constellation Boulevard in Century City.
