Once again, the Westside is hopping with art events. There are numerous gallery exhibitions opening this weekend.

I wanted to point out a “must see” exhibit that is taking place at CHG CIRCA (Corey Helford Gallery) in Culver City, which is probably most known for showing pop surrealism and figurative art.

If you’ve ever been to one of its openings, you can attest to the fun art parties and hip crowd that flocks to this gallery.

CHG recently closed its larger space, but still maintains a smaller one in the same area. This Saturday, May 17, CHG CIRCA presents the U.S. debut of Dina Goldstein’s solo exhibition featuring the pop surrealist photographer’s most recently published series “Fallen Princesses” and “In the Goldstein pokes fun at classic fairy tales, as she contradicts the unrealistic ‘happy endings’ that we grew up with.”

“For more than 20 years I’ve examined the realities of modern life and the human condition… first as a photojournalist and now as a conceptual photographer working with large scale tableau,” Goldstein said. “I am critical of the notion of ‘happily ever after’ and even though I am in awe of human existence itself and see beauty everywhere, what most interests me is the real stuff of life… life that includes the mundane, the unglamorous, and the tragic.”

CHG CIRCA co-owner Jan Corey said she sought work that she would personally collect herself.

“I look for art that evokes an emotion and is well executed. I chose to exhibit Dina’s work for her ironic sense of humor in juxtaposing fantasy and real life. I guess you could call it photo non-realism,” Corey said.

The opening reception takes place on Saturday, May 17 at CHG CIRCA (8530 Washington Blvd, Culver City 90232) from 7-10 pm and will run through June 14. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday from noon to 6 pm. For more information, call 310.287.2340 or visit coreyhelfordgallery.com.

Meanwhile, the art of Kate Bonner will be featured in a solo exhibition at Luis De Jesus Gallery.

Although her work has been included in several group exhibits at the gallery, this will be her first solo show both at Luis De Jesus and in Los Angeles.

Luis De Jesus, owner and gallery director, was originally introduced to Bonner’s work through a group exhibit which included one of his other gallery artists.

“It stopped me in my tracks the moment I saw it and I knew immediately that I wanted to work with her,” De Jesus said. “It was direct, playful, colorful, poetic, beautifully crafted.”

The exhibit, entitled “Possible Event,” features a collection of images, which are gathered into one frame.

While interweaving photographs (by folding, rolling, and turning them inside out), the artist allows the images to both compete and unify each other.

Bonner’s three-dimensional art encompasses several mediums such as sculpture, photography, and installation.

The opening will be held on Saturday, May 17, from 6-8 pm at Luis De Jesus (2685 S. La Cienega Boulevard, Los Angeles 90034).

On view through July 5; Gallery hours are Tuesday-Saturday from 10 am to 6 pm. For more information, call 310.838.6000 or visit luisdejesus.com.
