The Latest Art Exhibitions From Santa Monica, Venice, & Culver City

This Sunday, February 7, some interesting art exhibitions will be on view on the Westside enabling a thoroughly enjoyable art-filled week to follow.

Starting at Santa Monica’s Bergamot Station, bG Gallery offers an unusual exhibition titled “Grayscale Wonderland II.” Gallerist and curator Om Bleicher asked artists to create works primarily within the color scheme of gray. “This is our second year doing a grayscale show,” Bleicher said. “The first year focused on magical lands in nuanced gray, while this year is focusing on more high contrasts and split focus.”

This year Bleicher has invited new artists to participate, including Scott Horton, who is showing for the first time at bG Gallery. “The theme is a perfect forum to debut this series,” explained Horton, who has created a black and white digital series titled Dreamcatchers. “Drawing on its graphic nature, this gives the pieces simplicity and a neutral objectivity.”

Horton said he wanted the series to draw the audience in. “Working in black and white allowed me to place objects, backgrounds, and scenes together that might seem like they belong, but would make no sense if they were in color.” He went on to say that often color creates its own mood. “It provides an immediate visual reference for backgrounds, scenes, and objects. Without color, water turns into sky, space, or land.” The Dreamcatchers series currently includes ten artworks. Horton said he intends to create more…some with full color. In Venice, C.A.V.E. Gallery features a solo exhibition titled “Bones.” South African artist/photographer/filmmaker Ralph Ziman responds to the atrocities of trophy hunting in South Africa. Inspired by happenings such as the “Cecil the Lion” incident, the artist seeks to expose the canned hunts (provided to wealthy tourists) in exchange for large sums of money in this provocative exhibition. On a recent trip to South Africa (on a direct flight from Atlanta), Ziman noticed an unusual amount of men in bush gear on the plane. Later, he found out there were twenty-one rifles on that flight. “It amazes me that people who have never traveled outside the U.S. before are now traveling, not to broaden their minds, but to kill things.”

In Culver City Luis de Jesus Gallery has been taken over by two artists. For the past month, artists Josh Reames and Jose Lerma have enjoyed an artist residency at the gallery. The collaborative exhibition features a group of works with a pair of monumental paintings (composed of two triptychs which measure 10 x 24 feet each) as its centerpiece.
