A local tradition, Brentwood’s annual 5K Kickin’ Cancer! 5K and Family Fun Day returns Sunday, Sept. 20 to raise endorphins, money, and awareness in the name of those who have been affected by women’s cancers.
One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime, and there will be 21,290 new cases of ovarian cancer, the deadliest gynecologic cancer, in the U.S. this year alone. The run is the flagship event for the Lynne Cohen Foundation, which supports women and families at risk for breast and ovarian cancers. They aim to prevent any more statistics from emerging.
Head to the starting line and main stage at 11620 San Vicente Blvd. at 9 am with fellow neighbors, friends, and runners for a high-impact and fun way to take action and get moving for women’s cancer prevention.
The event was founded 14 years ago to celebrate the life of Brentwood resident Lynne Cohen, who lost her battle with ovarian cancer in 1998 at the age of 53. Her three daughters created the Lynne Cohen Foundation for Ovarian Cancer Research to support research combating ovarian cancer through prevention and early detection.
“Prevention is our cure,” said Executive Director Amy Cohen Epstein, who was 21 years old when her mother Lynne died. “The Kickin’ Cancer! 5K is our signature event, and it is the foundation’s primary means of funding its Preventive Care Clinics, which aim to protect families like mine from losing their mothers, daughters, and sisters.”
The money raised at Kickin’ Cancer! funds a unique network of Lynne Cohen Preventive Care Clinics, which bring a range of specialists and physicians together to address the needs of individual patients and their families. Human-centered and intensely collaborative, the clinic functions like no other personalized and preventative medicine center.
Highlights of Kickin’ Cancer! will promote both family fun and breast cancer awareness. A Kids’ Corner boasts entertainment, T-shirt coloring contest, fitness activities, a bounce house, and more. The top male and female finishers will receive 5K awards including gifts from sponsors. And the Tribue “Signature” Wall will honor and remember those touched by cancer. Also available will be the Kickin’ Cancer! store, a place to gear-up to represent the cause year-round.
The event starts off at 7:30 am with registration and the Family Fun Day Expo for free samples, activities, and other giveaways. At 8:15 am Burn 60 trainers will spark a pre-5K high-intensity interval workout, followed by the 1st Place Team Fundraising award at 8:30 am. Fitness Trainer and Ambassador of Health and Happiness will warm-up runners at 8:50 am.
Then run, walk, or stroll during the 5K and Stroller Run, starting at 9 am.
For a post-run workout, Burn 60 will host a 20-minute endurance burn workout at 9:45 am. At 10 am, awards will be handed out to the Top 5K Finishers.
After that, children and teens have tons of activities. There’s FUNtada drills with Sara Haley at 10 am, teen awards ceremony at 10:15 am, and the Kiddie Fun Run warm-up at 10:20 am and after the run at 10:45 am.
The Kiddie Fun Run starts at 10:30 am, where children 10 and younger can run less than 1K and receive free Lakeshore goody bags. The event concludes at 11:15 am.
If you can’t be there in person, Virtual Participants fundraise online, and are welcomed into the movement with a limited edition Kickin’ Cancer! T-shirt for a #selfie4HOPE.
