Twenty films have advanced in the race for the visual effects Oscar, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced today.
The list will eventually be winnowed to 10 films that will be considered in nominations voting. Nominations for the 88th Academy Awards will be announced Jan. 14.
The 20 films in the visual effects running are:

— “Bridge of Spies”;
— “Chappie”;
— “Everest”;
— “Ex Machina”;
— “Furious Seven”;
— “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 2”;
— “In the Heart of the Sea”;
— “Jupiter Ascending”;
— “Jurassic World”;
— “Mad Max: Fury Road”;
— “The Martian”;
— “Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation”;
— “The Revenant”;
— “Spectre”;
— “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”;
— “Terminator Genisys”;
— “Tomorrowland”; and
— “The Walk.”
