The Los Angeles County Probation Department announced on Tuesday that it will use a $315,000 state grant to monitor drivers on probation for felony DUI or multiple misdemeanor DUI convictions.
Probation Chief Jerry Powers said he was grateful for the grant, which allows probation officers to “work collaboratively with other agencies to promote public safety and ensure victims’ rights.”
Supervision for those deemed to be high-risk DUI offenders include unannounced home searches, random alcohol and drug tests and monitoring for compliance with court-ordered alcohol education and treatment programs.
In 2013, 246 people were killed and 6,338 were injured in alcohol- and drug-related crashes in Los Angeles County.
“Overall, California’s roadways are among the safest in the nation,” said Rhonda Craft, the director of the Office of Traffic Safety, which extended the grant. “But to meet future mobility, safety and accessible transportation objectives, we have to work very hard together to reach our common goal — zero deaths on our roadways.”
