The Port of Los Angeles saw cargo volumes climb 9 percent in September compared with the same time last year, resulting in the busiest month in years, harbor officials said.
September’s cargo volume was 775,133 Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units, or TEUs, up from the 710,892 TEUs in September 2013, officials said.
The last time the port saw greater volume was in August 2006, according to officials.
Larger ships and peak-season activity contributed to the rise in traffic, officials said.
Imports were 411,507 TEUs, up 11 percent from the previous September, when there were 370,786 TEUs. Exports inched up 0.20 percent, from 150,380 TEUs to 150,679 TEUs.
The containers that were loaded, for imports and exports alone, saw a 7.9-percent increase from 521,166 TEUs to 562,185 TEUs.
Empty containers sent to the Port of Los Angeles rose by 12.2 percent from last year, and when added to the overall volume, results in a total volume increase of 9 percent between last year and this year.
Volumes so far this year have increased 7.8 percent compared with the first nine months of 2013, rising from 5,847,167 TEUs to 6,302,470 TEUs.
