At noon on December 3 in California’s historic State Capitol, with family and friends looking on, I raised my hand and took the oath of office to become the Assemblymember for our 50th Assembly District.
Becoming a member of our State Legislature was an exhilarating moment for me. But, the culmination of this election also marks the formation of a new community, formed around the cities and neighborhoods of the 50th. And it marks the full implementation of two significant reform policies enacted by voters: the “top two†primary and the extension of term limits to a maximum of 12 years, vs. the previous maximum of 6.
So too, this moment marks a crossroads for the State of California. With the passage of the Proposition 30 tax measure and with unemployment numbers slowly dropping, the opportunity to move California towards a sustainable economy and better provide for the needs of California’s 38 million residents manifests itself.
Voters made themselves clear in this election: they want to see their State leadership working well together for good jobs and successful businesses, a greatly improved public education system, continued leadership on climate change and providing the resources to give every Californian the opportunity to thrive.
Just as I did as Santa Monica’s Mayor, I’ll do my best to achieve every one of these goals. But, I need and want your help and guidance. Over the months and years ahead, I look forward to finding innovative solutions to the many problems we face. I’ll want to hear your thoughts and, particularly, hear what solutions you think will help and those that you think won’t.
It is still “under construction†but you can find my new Official Website at http://asmdc.org/members/a50/
On my website, you can send me a message and sign up for our regular updates. Please do. Or, spend a few moments getting to know the 50th Assembly District. The website has the most detailed map of the District I’ve seen.
Thank you for placing your confidence in me. I look forward to working with you and accomplishing the many important goals and aspirations of the people of our community.
