The City of Beverly Hills presents photographers Carol Beckwith and Angela Fisher—the team’s book “African Ceremonies†won the United Nations Award for excellence—presenting “Body Paintings of Africa: Secret Messages and Hidden Meanings.†The presentation will include projections of their work. Part of Beverly Hills’ Forum Series, the free lecture will take place in the council chambers at Beverly Hills City Hall, 455 North Rexford Drive in Beverly Hills.
Beckwith and Fisher have authored 15 acclaimed books together. Their latest publication, “Painted Bodies: African Body Painting, Tattoos and Scarification†(2012) is a pan-African study of the art of body painting, which is used to attract potential mates, establish tribal identity and access the power of the spirit world.
Aware that traditional cultures in Africa are rapidly disappearing, Beckwith and Fisher are continuing their field research and photography and plan to publish another book on African ceremonies soon. Don’t miss this free opportunity to see their work and hear them speak about the 40 countries and 150 African cultures they’ve helped document.
