Locals gathered recently to hear Bill Rosendahl, Jody Siegler and Charlie Horowitz describe three new speed signs intended to get drivers to “Slow Down for Julia.â€
Julia Siegler, student at Harvard-Westlake, was struck by a car and killed in a tragic accident two years ago. Since that time, fellow classmates and friends have kept her memory alive. Charlie Horowitz, 13, of Brentwood has raised $18,000 – nearly the entire cost of two of the three new speed signs. Julia Siegler’s parents, Scott and Jody, also contributed to the cost, as did Mt. St. Mary’s College.
Julia’s mother, Jody, has championed the cause of safety along Sunset, which Rosendahl recognized with a plaque from the city. Vegetation needs to be cut back to improve visibility at corners; buses need more room to pull over on this thoroughfare; drivers need to STOP when a school bus stops; and drivers must be reminded to slow down.
Max Thoeny, another Harvard-Westlake student from Santa Monica, was on the bus that day and witnessed the accident that took Julie’s life. He and several friends put up signs saying “Slow Down for Julia†the day of the accident and replenished flowers at the corner of Cliffwood and Sunset – where the accident occurred – for quite some time.
