Boy Scout Troop 117 troop117.homestead.com, led by Scoutmaster Steve Summers, meets during the school year on Tuesdays at the Brentwood Presbyterian Church. Recently it has produced 3 additional Eagle Scouts, Gabriel Suciu, Frank Smith Jr., and Benjamin Lee, totaling 6 this year. The troop is grateful for the generous support of the Church, the Vicente Foods and Mr. Rosenfield, the owner of the Brentwood Country Mart.
Gabriel Suciu achieved his Eagle rank on August 11, 2011. He began scouting as a Bear cub in 4th grade and continued his path to Eagle with Troop 117. His Eagle Scout project involved revitalizing Tom Bradley Youth Center Library. With the help of 33 volunteers and many grateful donations, new shelves were created, and over 1,200 books were catalogued with a new tracking system. Now families are able to search age and subject appropriate books and either check them out or enjoy reading them in the library.
Frank Smith Jr. achieved his Eagle rank on September 8, 2011. He began scouting as a Cub Scout and continued with Troop 117 to pursue the path to become an Eagle Scout. For his Eagle Scout project, he organized, developed and recruited volunteers for painting of the exterior brick wall of Garr Academy of Mathematics and Entrepreneurial Studies, a small K-5 charter school. The wall was painted with brown and gold colors to match the colors of the school’s uniform.
Benjamin T. Lee achieved his Eagle rank on October 13, 2011. He joined Troop 117 three and a half years ago and worked hard to become an Eagle Scout. For his Eagle Scout project, Ben organized a community tree-planting event at the South Weddington Park. He led over 80 volunteers, who planted 16 trees around the fringes of the park for the neighborhood community to enjoy the shade and green grass. Ben is grateful for the guidance of TreePeople, an environmental nonprofit organization, and generous donations provided by Noah’s Bagels and Pizza Hut for the event.
