Each night there are approximately 19,000 women and children sleeping on the streets of Southern California.
Please consider joining The Giving Spirit volunteers as we once again reach out to give our homeless neighbors hope, sustenance and relief from the heat of the LA summer on Friday June 10, 2011 and Saturday June 11, 2011 at The Giving Spirit’s 6th Annual Reach Out Saturday
During The Giving Spirit’s annual Reach Out Saturday volunteers strive to deliver the survival packs put together to homeless women and youth, a fragile and growing segment of the homeless population.
The backpacks will be full of essentials for seeking shelter from the summer sun and heat (see a list of the contents below)
This is an ideal event for families and children of all ages who can make a difference together while learning the truth about poverty and homelessness in LA.
After assembling the kits participants will have the opportunity (not a requirement of course) to visit one or more of The Giving Spirit’s non-profit partner agencies to personally give these kits to those who need them and learn their stories while allowing them to reconnect to a world that has long since forgotten them.
Partner agencies include: Covenant House, Downtown Women’s Center, Jeff Griffith Youth Center, San Fernando Valley Rescue Mission, Stand Up for Kids, Los Angeles Youth Network, Ocean Park Community Center, School on Wheels and My Friend’s Place.

Friday, June 10th Evening – Assembly 6:00pm – 10:30pm
(all items for the kits arrive, are unpacked and prepared for Saturday AM assembly line)
Saturday, June 11th Morning Assembly 8:00am – 12:00pm
(final preparations are made and then the assembly line begins. 1,250 backpacks)
Distribution & Outreach 10am-6pm
(arrive and assist with assembly line, brief informational session will be held at approximately 10:45 then deliver kits to TGS non-profit partners)
Saturday Clean-up & Recycling 12:00pm – 4:00pm
(assist at the assembly point with clean up and recycling)

A substantial majority of LA’s 5,000 homeless families are headed by a single mother. 50% of children in those families are below the age of 6.
