Simone de Beauvoir has been called the “priestess of existentialism and modern feminism.” France’s most famous
woman writer from 1947 until her death is 1986, she is
regarded as one of the most brilliant minds of the modern
era.
The major source of the play, “A Very Easy Death,”
about the end of her mother’s life, has been called de
Beauvoir’s best book by Jean-Paul Sartre. The play also
examines the earlier conflict between mother and daughter–
a mother bound by tradition and convention versus her
intellectual, freedom-seeking daughter.
