The world changes in gross and dastardly ways but Brentwood, where we have lived for 46 years, stays as charming and warmly hospitable as always, despite a few minor changes.
Some examples are: Hamburger Hamlet morphed into the presidential eatery, known as the Tavern — and the Safeway Grocery story devolved into a Longs before it eroded into the three-letter store (aka CVS). Resiliently and wonderfully un-changing is Vicente Foods, characterized by its hospitable free coffee adjacent to its terrific in-house Mamalo’s bakery, a better-than-Juniors-deli, an intoxicating mini-winery, and a cast of characters (aka staff) who are our in-house pals.
Another magically wonderful Brentwood attribute is our Donald Bruce Kaufman library, which not only houses a fabulous array of books, but regularly hosts special (free) events such as poetry-readings, new book authors, etc.
As the lyrics from Nat King Cole’s song go:
Stay as sweet as you are,
Don’t let a thing
Ever change you.
Stay as sweet as you are,
Don’t let a soul
Rearrange you.
So, no matter what the Charlie Munger Project is called, I will always refer to it as ‘where Dutton’s Bookstore used to be”
