When you think of women in hip hop, your mind leaps immediately to Lil’ Kim or more recently to Nikki Minaj. These colorful characters have all but erased the women who proceeded them in the genre; artists like Queen Latifah and Salt ‘n Pepa. In contemporary rap, if a girl isn’t dressing for a costume party, she just isn’t legitimate.
Amber “Amber Alert” Fouse will challenge you on that. A rapper with her roots in Compton, and the grass-roots hip hop of Los Angeles, Amber doesn’t rely on glam-rock wigs and glittering boustiers to sell her music. She’s gaining momentum and garnering attention on talent alone.
With an album launch on the horizon, Amber Alert is moving with some heavy hitters. Produced by Music Doctorz, Andre Taylor and Louis Harden, her rhymes are representative of her city and pay homage to old school hip hop.
“I don’t want to sound like anyone else,” says Amber Alert, “but I don’t mind sounding familiar. I want to take it back and make it my own.”
Amber Alert is launching her latest single “West Coast Party” with a performance at The Key Club in the heart of the Sunset Strip on Saturday, February 19th, featuring legendary DJ Quik. Tickets are $35 at the door. For more information, visit www.amberalertem.com
