Neighborhood Block Party Provides Thrills for Kids While Parents Place Bids

Westwood parents will put the fun in fundraising with a street carnival and three-part auction to benefit their local elementary school. The event will take place on Sunday, April 25, 2010 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Ohio and Fairburn Avenues in Westwood.

Three phases comprise this year’s auction: an online auction that will run April 7-21, the two weeks leading up to the event (www.biddingforgood.com/fairburn), a silent auction that will take place during carnival hours and an exciting live auction the afternoon of the carnival. Anyone may participate in the auctions.

Items on the auction block include upscale hotel and spa getaways, meals at some of Los Angeles’ most famous restaurants, tickets to sports events and exclusive entertainment experiences, gift certificates for popular classes and services, gift baskets filled with fabulous products….and much more!

The Spring Fling Block Party will feature inflatable amusements including a baseball pitch, obstacle course and slide, delicious food from favorites like Baskin Robbins and Jody Maroni’s, face painting, a bake sale, a DVD and game sale, carnival games, prizes, raffles, crafts and entertainment. Kids and parents from all neighborhoods are welcome to join local families and friends for a day of play in the tree-lined streets. Admission is free.

While many fundraising auctions are formal, adults-only events, parent volunteers felt a daytime auction in conjunction with the Block Party would be fun for all members of the family – and eliminate the need to hire a babysitter! Even children can get in on the bidding at the ticket-based “Junior Fun-Raiser†table.

Proceeds from the Block Party and auctions will help pay for school art, music, hands-on science and physical education, nursing and teacher’s aides and campus improvements that, due to declining state funding, public schools are unable to provide.

“With support and donations from faculty, parents, local businesses and the neighboring community, we will be able to endow hundreds of students with the type of education all children deserve,†urges parent Annie Miler, Auction Chair and owner of popular local restaurant Clementine.

Donations are still being accepted and several event sponsorship opportunities are available. All contributions are tax-deductible, and auction volunteers are available to pick up items. Donation forms can obtained by contacting Julie Hirschberg (julierhirschberg@aol.com). To inquire about sponsorships or learn more about the event, please contact Katie Greco (kagreco@yahoo.com) or Laura Rogers (rogers@aresmgmt.com).

The Spring Fling and Auction are not sponsored by the LAUSD or Fairburn Avenue School.
