Nita Pesaud is an author, single mom, a medical assistant for a nursing home, and a true survivor.
Fluent in two languages, Dutch and English, Persaud was among the masses that fled the newly independent state of Suriname in South America, situated in the north of the country, between French New Guiana and Guyana, during the turmoil and violence that erupted after its declaration of independent in the 1980�s and 1990�s.
Can you imagine living in a country where political officials are paid to cooperate with criminals? Where the majority of the population lives on less than two dollars a week? Where civil unrest and intense fighting makes it unsafe for young children to attend school each day? Where the sick and elderly live in constant fear, and the stress drives many to the point of insanity and untimely death? Where you arrive home from work, only to find your house ransacked, and loved ones imprisoned and falsely charged with murder?
These were the scenarios common to Nita Persaud as a part of her everyday life, which deeply affected her mind and spirit, and ultimately her decision to work with mentally and physically challenged people, as a nursing assistant in a group home.
�Facing political corruption, poverty, and brutal violence in your homeland is unsettling, and creates such deep feelings of uncertainty and helplessness. However, that experience has made me a better person, and fueled a desired within me to help others,� said Persaud. �Although I have since relocated, everyday I remember all too well the hardships we faced, and have learned to truly appreciate the simple and precious things that life can provide,� she adds.

Nita Persaud was born in Guyana, South America and later immigrated to the Netherlands with her family during a time of political unrest in her native country. Fluent in both Dutch and English, Persaud studied Journalism, but is also fascinated by international politics and world history. An avid reader and dedicated writer, Persaud works with mentally and physically challenged people, as a nursing assistant in a group home.
