On Friday, October 9th works by Mozart, Haydn and Honegger will launch the 25th anniversary season of Music at St. Matthew’s, a concert series that has been offered by the Chamber Orchestra at St. Matthew’s in St. Matthew’s Church, Pacific Palisades, since 1985.
The non-profit St. Matthew’s Music Guild presents concerts not only at the visually and acoustically opulent church, but also in area schools, nursing homes and convalescent facilities.
“We are proud to continue our tradition of offering superb classical and new music to the entire Westside community,” said Music Director Thomas Neenan.
Comprised of some of the finest studio and professional musicians in the city, the Chamber Orchestra at St. Matthew’s has commissioned more than a dozen works by Los Angeles-area composers, including David and Maria Newman, Paul Chihara, Roger Bouland, Ross Wright, Dwayne S. Milburn and Marc Falcone. The orchestra also has premiered works by composers such as Bruce Broughton, Thomas Pasatieri, Tarik O’Regan, Gerald Near and Sasha Matson.
October 9th season opener will feature four principal wind players (Phil Feather, oboe; Patricia Massey, clarinet; David Sarachene, bassoon; and Teag Reeves, horn) in Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante for Winds. Swiss composer Arthur Honegger’s Pastorale d’Et and Haydn’s valedictory “London” Symphony No. 104 also will be presented.
On November 13, pianist Andrew von Oeyen, who made his Music at St. Matthew’s debut at age 15, will perform. The dynamic Mr. von Oeyen is currently touring with violinist Sarah Chang and will be the featured soloist with the Berliner Philharmoniker in Japan.
Other highlights of this 25th anniversary season include a collaboration with artist-in-residence Villa Aurora; a performance of Poulenc’s Organ Concerto in recognition of the 25th anniversary of St. Matthew’s Church’s impressive Pardee Memorial Fisk Organ; a concert by the Catgut Trio with the orchestra’s concertmaster, Yi-Huan Zhao; and a return appearance by the critically acclaimed Concord Ensemble.
Season subscriptions for Music at St. Matthew’s begin at $200; individual concert tickets are available for $35 at the door.
