The MountainGate Country Club in Brentwood will sponsor a golf and tennis tournament on August 11, whose proceeds will be donated to the Wounded Warrior Project (WWP). WWP provides aid to veterans seriously wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Co-sponsor Citi Smith Barney will donate $25,000 to the project. “I don’t think there’s ever been a golf tournament dedicated to a more deserving cause,†said Don Schwarz, a City Smith Barney senior vice president and Honorary Chair of the tournament’s Financial Services committee.
WWP has ministered to more than 12,000 veterans suffering from amputations, brain disorders and other injuries. Its services start at the bedside of the wounded at Army and Navy hospitals and continue during and after rehabilitation. Many of these veterans will need emotional, financial and/or administrative support for the rest of their lives.
“As recent headlines have indicated,†said WWP spokesman Todd Gould, “veterans and their families often have to confront a maze of obstacles to get benefits. WWP helps to eliminate those obstacles.†Interestingly, government healthcare agencies are finding that returning handicapped veterans to sporting activities is one of the best psychological therapies, he added. The MountainGate tournament will include breakfast, lunch and an awards dinner, and veterans will participate in the tournament.
The tournament continues to seek sponsorships. For more information, call (310) 476.6215 ext. 235, e-mail AGM@mtngatecc.com, or visit www.woundedwarriorproject.org
