The enchanting Wallis Theatre in Beverly Hills was transformed into an Italian Street scene for the production of “Scorsese – American Crime Requiem.” Set in a cabaret setting, complete with a bartender, who transforms into “Taxi Driver!” They even had some fortunate guests seated at café tables on stage. In collaboration with the innovative theater company, For the Record, this movie/musical collage, blends iconic scenes from Scorsese’s films, with music from the flicks – performed by Broadway caliber artists
Among my favorite songs were “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” (“Goodfellas”), “Love is Strange” (“Casino”), and “Sweet Dreams” (“The Departed.”) Gorgeous Carmen Cusak, portraying Ginger from “Casino” (Sharon Stone was in the movie), stood out warbling “I’m Sorry.” To keep in the Italian mood, Pia Toscano crooned “Il Cieo” in Una Stana from “Goodfellas.” A most entertaining evening indeed.
Being a Beverly Hills resident for three decades, I have heard only good things about the Beverly Hills Women’s Club – so I decided to finally give it a try. I was most impressed by the lovely location, attractive décor and the quality of their members and guests. President Mumsey Nemiroff presents a series of cultural programs, including French language classes, book club and monthly art talks. As a Society Columnist, of special interest is their diverse social calendar, filled with delicious luncheons, exciting events and philanthropic endeavors.
We were treated to a Vintage Fashion Show, presented by Elizabeth Mason (“The Paper Bag Princess”) whose theme was 100 Years of Fashion. Actually, this was very apropos since the Club is celebrating its Centennial Year. The models were all members of the club, including some friends of mine – Mara New and Agnes Nicole, looking fab in a 1950’s Ceil Champman cocktail dress. We also were treated to a lecture by Award Winning Costume Designer, Daniel Orlandi (“Down With Love” and “The DA Vinci Code”) who took us thru the magical world of motion picture costume design.
You can have the opportunity to celebrate at the BHWC Centennial Ball on Nov. 26 at the Four Seasons Hotel (along with owner, Beverly Cohen) who happens to be a member. For further info, please call 310.276.5804 – or check out their website www.bhwclub.org Hope to see you there!
