Now that the hazy, lazy days of summer are almost gone, the scintillating social city scene will once again become active. The period between September and December is the busiest time in a Society Editor’s life, and there are a few upcoming events I would like to share with you. The best news is that you are cordially invited to join me in what promises to be the most exciting season ever!

Saturday, Sept. 12 seems to be the biggest day on the social calendar – with the opening of the L.A. Opera (which I will detail in a future column) and the Arts Gran Fiesta Benefit Concert at the Eli and Edythe Broad Stage in Santa Monica. It will be a celebration of Mexican culture and feature America’s first all-female mariachi ensemble, Grammy-nominated Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles. Included in the event are a post-reception featuring Mexican cuisine and drinks, and a silent auction.  For ticket information, visit www.LAMusArt/org/GranFiesta.

The same evening, you are invited to join the L.A. Zoo’s Sunset Safari from 6 to 9 pm to enjoy the unique experience of up-close visits with the Zoo’s residents, special wildlife feedings, and keeper talks, which highlight Sumatran tigers, orangutans, and more. Included is a buffet dinner, live music, and rides on the extraordinary Tom Mankiewicz Conservation Carousel. For information on this safari experience, contact Nancy Simerly at 323.544.4717.

And last, but not least, Peggy Albrecht Friendly House, the first residential program in the country for women recovering from alcohol and drug abuse, will honor TV personality Kelly Osbourne, singer Moby, and L.A. City Council President Herb Wesson at their 26th annual Awards Luncheon, Saturday, Oct. 24 at the Beverly Hilton. This year’s honorees cover all areas of the entertainment and public service arenas, and they all have “given back” to the community that has embraced them. For information on this fashionable and fun afternoon, visit www.FriendlyHouseLA.org.

Guess I had better take out my Pith helmet and dancing shoes to get ready for the exciting experiences ahead!
