“Furious 7” remains the most-popular movie in North America for the third weekend, and set a speed record on its way to crack the $1 billion benchmark worldwide.
About $29 million in weekend sales was projected for “Furious 7” by Universal today, bringing the North America gross over three weeks to $294.4 million. The estimates were gathered by the film industry analysts at Rentrak.
“Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2” opened in second place, with an estimated $24 million in sales.
Another newbie, “Unfriended,” opened in third place, with a $16 million projection.
Rounding out the 10 most-popular movies this weekend in the United States and Canada, as estimated by the studios, were “Home” ($10.3 million), “The Longest Ride” ($6.9 million), “Get Hard” ($4.8 million), “Monkey Kingdom” (debuting at $4.7 million), “Woman In Gold” ($4.6 million), “The Divergent Series: Insurgent” ($4.2 million) and “Cinderella” ($3.9 million).
