Mike Bonin

Marvin Braude (1920–2005) was a member of the Los Angeles City Council, representing the 11th district for 32 years, between 1965 and 1997—the third-longest-serving council member in the history of the city. His influence is still felt in Los Angeles through the many young people he mentored including his daughters, Ann Braude, professor of Religious History at Harvard Divinity School, and Liza Braude- Glidden, Co-Founder and Creative Director of Beanfields Snacks, a Los Angeles-based company. Both daughters witnessed their father’s affection and loyalty towards the current 11th district councilman, Bill Rosendahl. Both feel confident that if Marvin were here, he would be out campaigning for Bill’s chief of staff, Mike Bonin to be the next 11th district councilman.

Liza still lives in the Brnetwood home Marvin and his wife, Dr. Marjorie Braude, purchased in 1953. Liza and her husband Reed recently hosted a meet-and-greet there for Mike Bonin. Friends and neighbors, including some who remember Marvin, came by to meet the candidate. Below are endorsements from each daughter:

From Ann Braude:
It gives me great pleasure to join my sister Liza in endorsing Mike Bonin to represent the 11th district in the Los Angeles City Council. How well I remember when my father gathered our neighbors in this living room nearly 50 years ago to discuss his first run for office. What motivated him are the same things that motivate Mike: a profound love of the extraordinary physical and social environment that make Los Angeles unique.

My father believed that Los Angeles is the best place in the world to live, and that the role of government is to foster that greatness, and make the city’s assets accessible and secure for all its people. When I think of his visionary leadership on issues like gun control, electric vehicles, police reform, rapid transit, fiscal responsibility and a host of others, I know how important it is who we elect to the Los Angeles City Council

I also remember well when Bill Rosendahl came to the house to ask for Marvin’s endorsement, and how pleased Marvin was to give it. I know if my Dad were here today he would want to continue his legacy of responsible government by giving Mike his endorsement.

From Liza Braude-Glidden:
From age eleven on, working in my dad’s campaigns, I learned that there is much more to politics than finding someone who agrees with my views. A good councilman has to know the job, to know the people and gain their trust. A good councilman not only knows his district, he knows how the district fits into the complexity of city, county, state, and even the country and the world. I learned it took alliances of people with many different perspectives from the most radical to the most conservative to effect lasting change.

Mike Bonin comes from a tradition I understand through my dad, Marvin Braude and his friend, the current Councilman, Bill Rosendahl. In Mike’s decades of public service and as in his work as Bill’s chief of staff, Mike has established himself in a tradition of consummate skill, deep civic engagement and sustainable progressive values. We are so lucky to have this long and unbroken legacy in our district.

The world is watching California and the world is watching what we do in the 11th district. My Dad was a global influencer, featured regularly in the national media. He helped pioneer recycling, and so many other important things. Who knows what stands Mike will be able to take as councilman. We need someone who will be ready to make decisions we can’t imagine. Let’s invest in Mike Bonin. My sister Ann and I are supporting Mike. We hope you will too.
