A cool, mysterious musical revue about a book and its wonderful secrets! Using original songs from the Santa Monica Playhouse repertoire of plays, The Magic Book explores the challenges and triumphs of its young teenage characters.
Through music, dancing, and dialogue, the characters find their own voices and learn the importance of being true to themselves. The story is fun, upbeat and will even surprise the audience with an alien or two!
Asher Bank wrote and produced this show, with help from his fellow young actors, as part of his Bar Mitzvah Tikkun Olam (or “repairing and restoring the world†) project, to help bring the wonderful experience of theater to kids who would otherwise never see a live theater performance.
One free show will be performed for pre-teen and teen kids from the Vista Del Mar Residential Treatment Program and other area organizations serving children in need. Proceeds from a second show, open to the public, will be a benefit the Santa Monica Playhouse Diversity-in-Education Fund, which provides scholarships for under-served kids to enroll in theater workshops at the Playhouse and underwrites field trips and in-the-school theater workshops for students from socio-economically disadvantaged schools.
Actors featured in THE MAGIC BOOK include: Dylan Adler, Asher Bank, Mira Baum, David (DJ) Burrus, Preston Espar, Nico Machamer, Gretel Payne, Alex Treisman, Lindsay Yocum, with words & music by Evelyn Rudie with Matthew Wrather. Book and direction by Asher Bank, co-directed by Mira Baum.
