Shameik Moore Delivers the Funny on Nick Cannon’s New Sketch Series

Shameik Moore
A new generation of multi-talented performers, once called “triple-threats†by the studios for their acumen at acting, singing and dancing are ruling the small screen on shows for networks like Nickelodeon, Disney, and now Cartoon Network.

Already a television veteran at 17 Shameik Moore has appeared on shows such as “Tyler Perry’s House of Payne” and BET’s “Reed Between the Lines”, and is now showing off his comedic skills on Cartoon Network’s new teen sketch comedy show, “Nick Cannon’s Incredible Crew”.

I sat down with the Atlanta-native to talk about the show, what it’s like to audition for Nick Cannon, and his goals as an emerging artist.

Bryan Shackleford: When did you know that you wanted to be a performer?

Shameik Moore: It wasn’t something that I’ve known all along. It kind of snuck up on me. I knew I wanted to be a performer when I couldn’t go more than 30 seconds without thinking about anything else. It’s really been a focus for me over the last two years.

BS: Have your friends and family been supportive of your new found desire to act, sing and dance?

SM: At first, I just wanted to dance, and I don’t think anyone really paid attention to how seriously I wanted it until they saw me in my first dance battle. Then I started winning battles, and they really started to believe in me. My family has been really supportive, taking me to dance class, auditions, traveling with me to Los Angeles… they want me to succeed and be happy.

BS: What was the audition process like for Incredible Crew?

SM: I was actually doing a pilot for Cartoon Network in Atlanta when I was asked to come to Los Angeles for a meeting about a new show. My father and I arrived for the meeting and Nick Cannon met us in the parking lot and walked me into the auditions. It all happened really fast! They had me do some random improve stuff, and then the next day, they called my manager and said they wanted me for the show.

BS: Were you nervous auditioning for Nick Cannon?

SM: I didn’t have time to be nervous!

BS: What’s it like working with him?

SM: Nick is an inspiring guy. He is always on the move, working hard, and it’s amazing to see him in action. He was there when I recorded a song in his studio for the show, “So Stylin’†, and he was just this really reaffirming presence in the room.

BS: How does it feel being part of an ensemble cast?

SM: Ensembles are really interesting. It feels like you are a part of a watch; everyone is a gear inside this larger mechanism, and we each have our strengths and our jobs, and without one, the other gears can’t do their jobs. I think that’s what makes the dynamic of an ensemble cast so unique.

BS: Are there particular cast mates that you like to watch work?

SM: Everyone on the show is incredibly talented. It’s awesome to watch to everyone work, but if I do like to watch Brandon and Shauna work. Brandon is unpredictable and will do anything for the laugh. He’s just willing to go there. On the other hand, Shauna is just really dedicated and pulls you into her performances. I really admire that.

BS: As a recording artist, you’ve shot some music videos for your own music. How does that differ from the music videos that you shoot for the show?

SM: The videos that I shoot for the show are all about being funny; the play on words and the crazy sets. The videos I shoot for my music are more serious. They’re more about showcasing my dancing abilities and I don’t act like such a fool.

BS: What can fans of the show and fans of your music expect in the future?

SM: The show has only just premiered, so there’s a lot of great stuff coming, like the music video for “So Stylin’†. I’ve been in the recording studio working on new tracks. There is definitely going to be some great new music this year, potentially a tour. I would love to do an action film or a romantic comedy… that’s a hint, if there are any directors reading this!

BS: Shameik, thanks for taking the time to talk with me. How can your fans stay updated on what’s new for you?

SM: I post everything to www.shameikmoore.com
