Westside Burglar Suspect Held

Jeffrey Wayne Langford, 53, pleaded not guilty August 27 in connection with at least a dozen home invasion robberies on Los Angeles’ Westside. Langford was arrested on August 26 for allegedly committing at least three robberies and maybe a dozen others. He has a criminal record and faces a possible third-strike and life in prison, authorities said.

Police have dubbed him “the Silverware Bandit,†and he is being held on $1.2 million bail. He faces three felony counts of residential burglary and residential robbery, and one felony count each of assault, false imprisonment by violence and receiving stolen property, police said.

Langford is expected of committing a string of home invasion robberies on the Westside of Los Angeles involving mostly elderly women. He is suspected of carefully casing West Los Angeles neighborhoods, selecting his targets and returning later to carry out the crimes. He was the subject of a tail by LAPD for weeks and was allegedly caught in the midst of preparation for another crime.

The suspect allegedly targeted elderly women. He would overpower them and force his way inside their homes or he would break in through unlocked windows or by jimmying a lock on a window or a door. He would then ransack the victims home and leave with the stolen property.

In the last event, which occurred in broad daylight on Westwood Boulevard, the suspect overpowered a 96-year-old woman in front of her home and forced her back inside; she was later treated and released for sustained bruises.

Langford is being accused of committing three robberies since June, including one in Santa Monica and two in Los Angeles. He is suspected of committing at least a dozen others.  According to the Los Angeles Times, he faces three felony counts each of residential burglary ad residential robbery, and one felony count each of assault, false imprisonment by violence and receiving stolen property. He was also charged with a misdemeanor account of cutting a phone line.
